'Chun--Heaven': the sound of heaven or heaven's Will |
An
ensemble of large Korean drums, dae-buks which are
evolved from traditional Korean drums affects the
audience deeply to move their shoulders in excitement.
The excitement changes to deep sensation in the
harmony of the Buddhistic rhythm of drumming and
the shamanistic rhythm.
- Performance time : 10 to 20 minutes.
- The number of performers: 4 to 5 persons. |
|
'Moo--Shamanism': the sound of gods |
This is a work which recomposes the shamanistic
rhythm now unfamiliar to the public, and is performed
on the stage. This is composed of such kinds of
rhythm as poonery, samojang and drunggwengyi usually
used for Byulsin gut- a kind of exorcism in the
eastern seaside area where there developed the rhythm
of an exorcising janggu and kwenggwari (a smaller
gong). The janggu and the kwenggwari used for exorcising
are different from those of common use in the drumming
style and usages. The rhythm here is so brilliant
as to demand the highest techniques.
- Performance time: 10 to 20 minutes.
- The number of performers: 4 to 5 persons. |
|
'Shon--Goodness': the sound of the sun-- knot |
This
is the harmony of the sound in which the new drumming
techniques of the traditional Korean percussion
instruments are applied to the western and African
percussion instruments like a djembe, and the Latin
American percussion instruments like bongos. In
spite of the repetition of simple rhythm, this harmony
of sounds makes the audience the more excited at
the heart, the longer they hear.
Performance time: 10 to 15 minutes.
The number of performers: 4 to 5 persons. |
|
'Wui--Position': the sound of the earth-- being called |
A drum is a representative of western percussion
instruments. Its diverse rhythm and sounds make
the public familiar with it. In particular, the
mixture of a western drum giving an intense impression
of hard rock, and collected drums making soft sounds
results in a beautiful ensemble which is complementary
to each other's weakness. |
|
'Tah--Beat': the sound of man |
Clapping alone can make an excellent music. All
audience together clap and stamp to make a harmonious
rhythm and regular beats of rock music. As the excitement
is heightened, the rhythm of funk and hip-hop is
added to the beats to make a perfect ensemble.

|
'Daedong--Unity': the sound of harmony |
The percussion dancing performance samool-nori is
more or less popular with the public. Samool-nori
in the seated position has been performed accompanied
by the western music, but when samool-nori is performed
in the standing and moving position, it not only
makes a harmonious music but also proclaims the
beginning of the music with an intense message.
In addition the exciting rhythm turns the two seemingly
ill-matched styles of music into a harmonious unity.
